History[edit | edit source]

In December 1884 Elizabeth Abraham had difficulty in renewing her license after remarrying:

Mrs E. Edmunds, for the Exchange hotel, Egerton, (was) postponed for the sitting of the adjourned court on Monday, the 29th instant, at 2 p.m.,... to allow of her getting sound legal advice as to her mode of procedure; as last year, being a widow, she had obtained renewal of license in her then name of Elizabeth Abraham, but having married a miner since then, whom the police objected to as the holder of a license, she could not apply for it in his name, the hotel, fittings, furniture, and land being also exclusively the property of herself and children. The police gave her an excellent character as a licensee, and the court decided that if she could not satisfactorily arrange matters by Monday, the 29th instant, to allow of a further postponement until the 21st proximo, but in that event her hotel must be closed for the first three weeks of the incoming new year.[2]
