The hotel was robbed in June 1866:

At the Smythesdale Police Court, on Friday, before Mr J. P. Hamilton, P.M., Robert Cato, alias Curly Bob, was charged with robbing the till at the bar of the Exchange Hotel, Scarsdale, and sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment.[2]
