The Family Hotel was a hotel in Barry's Reef, Victoria, <1874-1927.

Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was in Barry's Reef, a small mining community about 2.5 kms north of Blackwood.[1] It was next door to the Sultan Hotel.[2]

Background[edit | edit source]

Referred to as Cann's Family Hotel in August 1920.[3]

History[edit | edit source]

Thomas Maher advertised he was applying for a license for the hotel in March 1874:

I THOMAS MAHER, of Barry's Reef, do hereby give notice that I desire to obtain, and will at the next Licensing Meeting to be holden at the Court of Petty Sessions, Blackwood, on the 27th day of March, 1874, apply for, a PUBLICAN'S LICENSE under the Amending Wines, Beer, and Spirits Statute, 1870, for a house situate at Barry's Reef, and to be known as Maher's Family Hotel, containing six rooms, exclusive of those required for the use of the family. THOMAS MAHER. Dated this 10th day of March, 1874.[4]

The hotel was severely damaged by fire in January 1875, when the hotel next door, the Sultan Hotel, was burned to the ground:

Thos. Mahar's hotel, which adjoins the Sultan, has sustained great injury, the whole of the premises being entirely gutted, and the most of the southern portion of the building destroyed, and it is a perfect miracle to me that a single pole of it was left standing, considering the appliances they had for extinguishing the fire. Mahar is not insured, and is, therefore, a great loser by the fire...I consider it my duty to note the praise-worthy conduct of Senior-constable Wm. Irwin at the late fire, in being the means of rescuing the whole of Mr. Mahar's family from their premises. They were all asleep when he first made an entry into the house.[2]

Problems arose in October 1876 over the hotel's license:

Mary Ann Mahar, the elder, applied for a transfer of the license now held by her daughter, Mary Ann Mahar, the younger, for a house at Barry's Reef, known as the Family hotel. Transfer refused, in consequence of convictions having been recorded against the applicant, and her husband being an uncertificated insolvent.[5]

At the Blackwood Licensing Court in December 1876, Mary Ann Maher was refused a license for the hotel:

The applicaton of Mary Ann Maher for a license for the Family hotel was refused, as it was objected to by Constable Hawkes for the following reasons — the house not being required; applicant was not a fit and proper person, as she had been fined twice within six months for using obscene language. He further stated that there was a public-house on Barry's Reef to every twenty-five drinking men.[1]

John Cann advertised his license renewal application in December 1887:

Notice of Application for Renewal of a Victualler's License. I JOHN CANN, of Red Hill, Blackwood, in the Colony of Victoria, the holder of a VICTUALLER'S LICENSE for "John Cann's Family Hotel," at Red Hill aforesaid, do hereby give notice that I desire to obtain, and will, at the sitting of the Licensing Court for the Licensing Districts of Ballan North, South Ballan, Egerton, and Blackwood, to be holden at Ballan, on the 23rd day of December, 1887, apply for a Certificate authorizing the renewal of my said license. Dated the Thirtieth day of November, One thousand Eight hundred and Eighty-seven. JOHN CANN.[6]
