Site[edit | edit source]

The Farmers' Hotel was in Doveton Street.[1] The 1861 map shows the hotel on the west side of Doveton Street, and few buildings north of Mair Street.[2] In 1862 the address was described as Market Square.[3]

Background[edit | edit source]

There was a Mather's Hotel in Market Square, licensed to George Mather in June 1858.[4]

History[edit | edit source]

In September 1881, John Casey was advertising he held the publican's license:

FARMERS' HOTEL, MARKET SQUARE. JOHN CASEY, Proprietor of the above well and favourably known Hostelry, begs to RETURN THANKS to his patrons for past favours. J. C. having served nearly a quarter of a century as Caterer to the creature comforts of man and horse, flatters himself that he knows most of their wants and wishes, which it shall be his pleasing duty to faithfully attend to. For the convenience of families J. C. has opened SINGLE BOTTLE DEPARTMENT, Where LIQUORS of SUPERIOR QUALITY will be served at MODERATE PRICES. P.S.—Superior Stabling Accommodation.[5]

On 22 March 1915, the hotel was included on a list of hotels to be deprived of their licenses. This list was complied by the Licenses Reduction Board in Melbourne. The Ballarat West licensing district hearings on this list were to be held on 27 April.[6] The hotel was one of about 40 hotels closed by the License Reduction Board and ceased trading at 9.30pm on 31 December 1915.[7] The court paid £770 compensation.[8]
