History

The publican and several customers were fined for Sunday drinking in October 1914:

In the local court yesterday, Mary Parkinson, licensee of the Farmers' Arms Hotel, Daylesford, was fined £5 for having had her bar door open on Sunday, 4th October. Stewart M'Cahon, John Wray and William Streat were also each fined £1 for having been illegally on the premises of the Farmers' Arms Hotel on the same day.

In September 1918 the state of the drain outside the hotel was brought up at council meeting:

Cr Howe referred to the bad state of the drain leading from the butter factory past the Farmers' Arms Hotel. It was in a disgusting state on Saturday morning, there being two or three inches of scum and filth in it. He considered it was a lovely fever bed. Mr Stewart said the drain was cleaned out every week.-Referred to the inspector.- Cr King said the drain would never he satisfactory until a proper concrete drain had been put down. There was a considerable traffic round those parts of horses and cattle, and the split pipes were not satisfactory.

In June 1922 a man was found dead in the hotel stables:

SUDDEN DEATH. On Sunday morning a man named Arthur Geo. Pretty, aged about 45 years, a well-known resident, was found dead in a stable at the Farmers' Arms hotel. The deceased was employed by Mr Parkinson, of the hotel, digging potatoes, and complained on Saturday of being ill. He went to the football match on Saturday afternoon, and on returning to the hotel shortly after 7 p.m,, he started to go to his home, but returned, stating that he was ill; Mr Parkinson asked him to stay, which he did until about ll p.m., when he determined to go. He was not seen again until 11 a.m. on Sunday morning, when he was found dead amongst some bags in stable. The matter was reported to the police and Sergeant Opie and Constable Doherty visited the hotel. Life being extinct the body was taken to the hospital morgue, where on Monday Dr. Ruddle performed a post mortem examination, and an enquiry was held before Mr R. C. Densen, deputy coroner, on Monday afternoon. The deceased, who leaves a wife and large family, the eldest being 17 years, suffered for some time from bronchial trouble.

In the Daylesford Court of Petty Sessions, M. Parkinson, licensee of the Farmers Arms Hotel was fined £3 with 14/6 costs for having allowed persons on the premises during prohibited hours.

Inquests

• September 1867, into the deaths of three lost children, Alfred Herbert Burman, William Graham, and Thomas Graham. They "...were found dead at Musk Creek on 13th September, 1867, having been lost since 30th June; and the jury are of opinion that they died from exposure and want."

The People

• From at least 1912 until 1949 the publican was Mary Parkinson.
  • In December 1914 she was granted the license for a fee of £35. Her license was renewed in December 1915.
• In 2009 the hotel was bought by Susanne Devine and Claire Levine.
• In 2015 the hotel was bought by Mitch Duncan.
