History[edit | edit source]

In July 1861 a woman exposed herself in the hotel:

A NASTY OLD WOMAN.-Margaret M'Cracken, a wretched old drunken woman, was charged with using filthy language in the bar of the Fire Brigade Hotel, and with indecently exposing herself. The landlord of the hotel in question gave the accused into custody, and deposed to her conduct She was fined 40s, or fourteen days in gaol.[2]

In November 1865, the publican, Richard Morgan, catered a dinner for the ninth anniversary of the Ballarat Fire Brigade at the fire station:

Host Morgan, of the Fire Brigade hotel, Barkly street, made his debut on this occasion as caterer, and he spread an ample feast, and provided plenty of waiters to attend the wants of the guests.[3]

In April 1872, Simon Dempster, formerly a barman at the Charlie Napier Hotel, and a member of the fire brigade, shot himself in a bedroom at the hotel:

Mr Simon (commonly known as Samuel) Dempster, an old resident of Ballarat, committed suicide on Saturday night, at Morgan’s Fire Brigade hotel, in Barkly street.[4]

It was one of the 40 hotels closed in 1891 in Ballarat East as part of the changes to licensing laws.[5] There was a total of £779 compensation for the closure of the hotel[5]; the licensee £327 10s, and the owner £452.[6]

In January 1893 it was reported that the business was now selling temperance drinks.[7]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

The hotel was also used for community events.

In March 1861 the hotel was the venue for the marriage of Ebenezer Thomas and Mary Jones:
