Background[edit | edit source]
The hotel dates from 1856 and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Database.[1] Also known as Flack's Hotel.[3]
History[edit | edit source]
The hotel was built in 1856 by George Flack.[1] The stables were used by Cobb and Co.[1]
The hotel's safe was stolen in June 1931:
ROBBERY AT BALLAN. Hotel Safe Stolen. The theft of an iron safe and its contents valued it £40 from the Ballan Hotel was reported to the Ballan police at 8 o'clock on Friday morning by the licensee Mr H. S. Jackson. The safe contained three bank books, a Victualler's licence made out in the name of H. S. Jackson, a black note book, 18 bottles of gin, four bottles of whisky, 16 boxes of cigarettes of various brands and £2/10 in cash. Entrance was gained by the thieves between the hours of 3 o'clock and 7 o'clock in the morning by breaking a pane of glass in the rear of the building.[4]
The publican was thanked by the local council in September 1936:
ONE of the landmark in Ballan is the Ballan Hotel, the licensee of which for the past 14 years has been Mr Harry A. Jackson, one of the most popular sportsmen of the district. For 45 years the Municipal Council has held its quarterly dinner at the well known hotel, and as a gesture from the Council during the Centenary celebrations, Mr and Mrs Jackson were presented with an enlarged photograph of the president and members of the Council. Many officials of the leading road races which pass Ballan use the commercial room of the hotel, cheerfully provided by the licensee for checking purposes.[5]
The hotel was broken into in January 1938:
THIEVES AT BALLAN. BALLAN, Sunday. Thieves forced an entrance into the store of Messrs. Flack early this morning and stole goods valued at about £30. Ballan Hotel, of which Mr. H. S. Jackson is licensee, was also entered, the cellar door on the verandah being forced. Nothing was stolen.[6]
Jackson left the hotel at the end of 1946:
APPLICATION for TRANSFER of LICENCE. I, Henry Samuel Jackson, the holder of a Victualler's licence for the Ballan Hotel, at Ballan, in the Grant Licensing District, and I, George Raven, of the said Ballan Hotel hereby give notice that we will APPLY to the Licensing Court at Melbourne on Monday, the sixteenth day of December, 1946, for the TRANSFER of the said LICENCE to the said George Raven. Dated this fourth day of December 1946. H. S. JACKSON. Transferor. GEO. RAVEN Transferee. John W. Robertson & Ramsay, of 341 Collins street, Melbourne, solicitors for the transferor. McInerney, Williams, & Curtain, of 90 Queen street, Melbourne, solicitors for the transferee. JAMES O'LOUGHLIN, of 10 Camp street, Ballarat, hotel broker.[7]
After closing the building was used as a real estate office.
