History[edit | edit source]

Host Lester has seen as much of hotel life as any victualler in the city. Old chums will remember him ... He occupied the Free Trade hotel first in 1854, just after the discomfiture of Lalor’s little force at the Stockade, and he had to mend the hotel roof where some stray bullets had made repairs necessary."[1]
