George H. Spence was a publican in Talbot, Victoria, <1908-1910.

George Henry Spence was the fifth of 12 children born to George Spence and Jane Heslop. George and Jane had married on 17 January 1856 in Crook, Durham, England, and came out to Australia in 1857. They lived at Maribrynong, Lethbridge, and then Durham Lead where George Henry was born in 1865.[1] His parent's later ran the Buck's Head Hotel in Clunes.

Spence married Grace Ann Mitchell in Victoria in 1891.[2] Grace, the daughter of John Mitchell and Ann White, was born in Scarsdale in 1870. They had a number of children including:

  • Melva Heslop, born 1891, Clunes[3], died 1974, Maryborough.[4]
  • George Stanley, born 1892, Clunes[5], died 1933, Malvern.[6] Serious gun shot wounds in right leg in France, September 1918, and returned to Australia as an invalid.
  • John Mitchell, born 1895, Talbot[7], died 1930, Maryborough.[8]
  • Robert Reece, born 1899, Talbot[9], died 1972, Mildura.[10] Robert was a barman in Mildura.

In August 1908 and May 1909 Spence held the license for the Town Hall Hotel in Talbot.[11][12]

Spence died at Talbot on 17 July 1910, and is buried in the Talbot Cemetery.[13]

After Spence's death, Grace continued at the Town Hall Hotel. She married William Chesterfield in 1915.
