History[edit | edit source]

George Stoddart was born on 28 January 1826 in Mellerstain, Berwickshire, Scotland, the son of James Stoddart and Sarah Paterson.[1][2]

According to Stoddart family sources, George Stoddart purchased the hotel from John Linette Smith sometime in 1855-1856.[3] Smith later married Stoddart's sister, Elizabeth.

From at least May 1858 to his death in 1873, Stoddart held the license for the Nugget Hotel in Smythesdale.[4][5][6]

He married Sarah Ann Simpson at Smythes Creek on 20 August 1857.[2] They had several children including:

On the 7th inst., at the Nugget Hotel, Smythesdale, Mrs George Stoddart of a daughter.[9]

  • George Samuel, born 1861, Smythesdale.[10]
  • Oliver Simpson, born 1862, Smythesdale.[11]:

On the 7th May, at the Nugget Hotel, Smythesdale, Mrs George Stoddart, of a son.[12]

  • Sarah Jane, born 1864, Smythesdale.[13]
  • Mary Georgina, born 1865, Smythesdale.

On the 12th November, at the Nugget Hotel, Smythesdale, Mrs George Stoddart, of a daughter; both doing well.[14]

  • Robert Paterson, born 1867, Smythesdale.[15]
  • Lily Louisa, born 1869, Smythesdale.[16]
  • Berthe Beatrice, born 1871, Smythesdale.[17]

In May 1863 Stoddart was charged with failing to pay back a £300 pound loan:

Kennelly v Stoddart-Action to recover £250, for money lent; Mr Walsh, instructed by Mr Stedman, for the plaintiff; and Mr Finn for the defendant. George Stoddart, hotelkeeper at Smythesdale, deposed that be had known the plaintiff, James Kennelly, for the last two years and a half. Had never received the loan of any money from the plaintiff. Did not remember being asked by Kennelly at Dent's Hotel, about ten months ago, for the £300 odd owing to him. His Honor being informed that the plaintiff was not present, Mr Walsh elected a nonsuit; judgment accordingly, with £3 3s costs for the defendant.[18]

In June 1863 the police challenged George Stoddart's license application:

George Stoddart, Nugget Hotel, Smythesdale. Sub-Inspector M'Namara opposed the application on the ground that gambling was permitted to be carried on in the house. Postponed for a week.[19]

In July 1870, Stoddart was chairman of the Smythesdale Cemetery Trust.[20]

In July 1870, Thomas Johns was convicted for stealing from Stoddart:

Thomas Johns pleaded "Not guilty" to stealing a saddle, the property of one H. A. Corinaldi. The evidence was clear against the prisoner, and the jury found him "Guilty." He was then charged with stealing a hat, brush, and crowbar, the property of one G. Stoddart, at Smythesdale. The prisoner was also convicted on this charge, and was remanded for sentence.[21]

Stoddart died on the 30 January 1873:

Mr George Stoddart, landlord of the Nugget hotel, and an old resident of Smythesdale, died very suddenly on 30th January.[22]

He was buried in the Smythesdale Cemetery.[23]:
