History[edit | edit source]

The mine opened on 29 July 1880:

Our Ballarat correspondent, writing under yesterday's date, says: — The marking off of the shaft of the Great North Hurdsfield Gold Mining Company took place this afternoon; in the presence of a large number of shareholders, and was performed by Mr. A. Bell, one of the freeholders. The situation of the claim is due north of the Central, East and North Hurdsfield Companies, and great faith is entertained locally that the present shaft will bottom on good washdirt. After the marking off, an adjournment was made to Kinane's Hotel, where the success of the company was duly toasted. The shaft, which is 9 feet by 3 feet 3 inches, will be commenced forthwith, the first shift going on at twelve o'clock to-night.[1]
