The Great Northern Hotel was a hotel near Ballarat, Victoria, <1869-1870>.

Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was in Creswick Road, Ballarat, between the Bowling Green Hotel and the Rose Hill Hotel, on the corner of the road lading to the Great Northern Junction Mine.[1]

Background[edit | edit source]

The hotel was named after the mine which was close by.

History[edit | edit source]

In October 1870, the hotel was flooded:

At the Great Northern Junction hotel, at the corner of the Creswick road and the road leading up to the claim, the landlord informs us, the water was nine inches or a foot higher than in October, 1869. It was over the bar floor before two a.m. on Saturday, and the landlord who was in bed, was roused by the noise. Women on the flat at the side of the road here could be heard screaming with fright, but few left their houses, for as soon as the water got so high as to threaten great damage it began to recede. At the hotel a good deal of damage was done. When some men went out to the backyard of the hotel to look after a pig they found that the animal had escaped, and it was soon after discovered in one of the bedrooms contentedly munching a pillow.[1]
