The Green Harp Hotel was a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, <1864>.

Background[edit | edit source]

Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was in the Borough of Ballarat Licensing District[1], in Creswick Road near the cemetery.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was being offered for sale or lease in June 1864.[2]

In the license application for June 1864 it was described as:

CHARLES DOOHEY, of Creswick road, Borough of Ballarat.-Wooden building, containing six rooms, and licensed under sign of the Green Harp Hotel.[3]

The hotel was again offered for sale in December 1864:

THE GREEN HARP HOTEL AND STABLES. Situated on a residence area, and having an extensive frontage to the Creswick road, and opposite to the first milestone. The Green Harp is well situated for business, and the season is at hand when the receipts will be large and equal to the takings of most hotels in the district. The wines, spirits, furniture, and effects, in excellent condition, will be sold without any reserve immediately after the sale of the Green Harp, on the premises. WELSH and SURPLICE, Auctioneers.[4]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

In March 1864 the hotel was the venue for an inquest into the death of Mary Ann Marks of Creswick Road, aged 25, from congestion of the brain.[5]
