In 1872 the hotel was described as being at Snake Valley.[1] In 1883 the hotel was part of the Carngham Licensing district.[2]

Background[edit | edit source]

In June 1861, Charles Hall was granted a license for the Grey Horse Hotel at Snake Valley, is this a reporting error and should be Greyhound?[3] In June 1862 the hotel was known as the Greyhound Inn.[4]

History[edit | edit source]

In November 1862 the publican was charged:

Police v Charles Hall, for permitting persons to resort to his licensed public-house to exercise a game of bagatelle; fined 40s and 5s costs.[5]

He took out a license for the bagatelle table later during the same court hearing.

The hotel's license was reviewed by the Licenses Reduction Board in January 1912.[6] The result of the hearing was that the hotel was to be closed.[7]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

  • In February 1888, Smythesdale surgeon Dr. Hayes, was available for consultation at the hotel on Mondays and Fridays from 11 till 12.[8]

Lodges[edit | edit source]

  • Loyal Good Samaritan Lodge of Oddfellows, November 1870, ninth anniversary dinner and ball.[9]

Politics[edit | edit source]

The People[edit | edit source]

  • In June 1862 the license was granted to Charles Hall.[4]
  • In December 1909 following the death of Charles Hall, the license was granted to Walter Hall as manager of the estate for the trustees.[17]
