The Halfway House Hotel was a hotel near Cardigan, <1859-1877>.

Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was on the Carngham Road, and sometimes described as being at Cardigan.[1]

There was also the Halfway House Hotel, on the Smythes Creek Road, and it very possible that some of the information refers to the wrong hotel.

Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

In July 1870, a former landlady of the hotel, Mrs. Gibbs, was injured in a road accident:

It appears that there was quite a chapter of accidents on the Rokewood road on Wednesday. Mr and Mrs Gibbs were driving into Ballarat, and, somewhere near the Rokewood Junction, Mr Gibbs was walking behind the vehicle up the hill, when a mining plan that was in the vehicle fell against the wheel, making such a sound as caused the animal to run away. The vehicle was capsized, and Mrs Gibbs sustained severe injury. She was removed to Gyles' hotel, and placed under the care of Dr Scott. On Thursday evening she was still at the hotel, not being sufficiently recovered to be removed home. Mrs Gibbs was for a long time landlady of the Half-way House hotel, Smythesdale and Carngham road, and is therefore well known in this quarter.[2]
