The Hermit's Cave Hotel was a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, <1857-1862>.

Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was in Main Road.[1] The 1861 mining map places it on the south east corner with Barkly Street.[2] This is now a reserve and site of the Chinese memorial.

History[edit | edit source]

Withers described what the hotel was like back in 1857:

The Stone mentioned awhile back kept the Hermit's Cave in the Main road, on the south side a little east of Barkly street, and not far from the old Duchess of Kent. Stone had as a sign a picture of a Druid-like Hermit in a cave, and underneath the following lines:—

"The Hermits of old drank water, ’twas cold,
They faded and withered away;
But the moderns found out, that ale and brown stout,
Was good for to moisten old clay.”[3]

In May 1858 the publican was charged for not having the hotel lamp lit:

A CARELESS PUBLICAN.- Robinson v Stone.- This was a summons brought by Constable Robinson against the proprietor of the Hermit's Cave Hotel for leaving the lamp in front of his hotel unlight on two separate occasions. The defendant admitted the truth of the charge and was fined 5s with a caution.[4]

In November 1859 a man stole money from the till in the bar:

About one o'clock on Sunday afternoon a man entered the Hermit's Cave Hotel, on the Main Road, and put his hand into the till, out of which he took a 5s piece. A girl who sat in the adjoining room heard him and gave the alarm, when the fellow ran away and dropped the money in the bar. He was pursued by a policeman in the direction of Golden Point, but he completely baffled his pursuer by concealing himself in the Chinese camp.[5]

The hotel was flooded during the Ballarat flood of 9 December 1860.[6]

A huge fine against the publican was reduced in November 1859:

Yesterday, at the Eastern Police Court, Mr Daly notified to Mr Trench his intention of reducing the fine which he recently inflicted on the landlord of the Hermit's Cave hotel, from £52 to £2, as he doubted the legality of the former penalty. He also intimated that if any other parties were complained against for a similar offence, their license would be suspended.[7]
