Background[edit | edit source]
History[edit | edit source]
In May 1857 the owner A. P. Bowes, offered the hotel for sale or lease.[3]
The hotel was burnt to the ground on 26 November 1862, during a large fire which also destroyed 30 buildings.[4] The hotel was owned by a Mr Crosbie and occupied by Lyon Morwitch. The building was insured for 500 guineas.[5]
The hotel must have been rebuilt, as the publican of the Clare Castle Hotel transferred his license to the Horse Bazaar in February 1864.[6]
In June 1864 Bridget Cass advertised her intention to apply for a transfer of the license:
TO the Bench of Magistrates of Ballarat East.-I, BRIDGET CASS, Housekeeper, now residing in Eureka street, Ballarat, do hereby give notice, that it is my intention to apply to the justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions to be holden at Ballarat East on the 1st day of July, 1864, for a Certificate authorising the issue of a Publican's License for a house situated on Main street, known by the sign of the Horse Bazaar Hotel, at present occupied by John Balton, and containing two sitting rooms and two bedrooms, exclusive of those used by the family. Dated at Ballarat this 16th day of June, 1864. BRIDGET CASS.[7]
