History[edit | edit source]

In July 1874, a man (publican?) from the hotel was seriously wounded, and another killed:

FATAL AFFRAY AT BALLAN. By Electric Telegraph. (From our own correspondent.) Ballarat, 17th July. A desperate and fatal affray occurred at Ballan this morning. H. Denahy, of the Horse and Jockey Hotel, East Ballan, and W. Thompson, farmer, of Pentland-hills, went to put some horses into Mr. Clarke's paddock. The care-taker, Pierpoint, who is Denahy's father-in-law, being absent from his hut, Denahy entered by way of the chimney, and while awaiting his arrival lifted a partition in the hut consisting of bagging, when a gun was fired at him, the shot passing near Denahy's legs. Denahy seized the gun and wrenched it from his assailant. He then found a pistol pointed at him, which missed fire. Denahy closed with the fellow, and seized the pistol, but was stabbed in about ten places, namely, in the eye, arms, back, and over the heart. Denahy ultimately overcame the man, and left him in charge of Thompson, while he (Denahy) went for medical relief and the police. After Denahy left the fellow fired twice at Thompson, and then made off. Thompson then shot at him, and when the police arrived he expired. The man was a perfect stranger in Ballan, but arrived with a double-barrelled gun, a Colt's revolver, and a horse pistol, also a butcher's sharp knife. He is about forty years of age, stout build, fair complexion, and full beard. An inquest will be held tomorrow. Denahy's wound, it is feared, will prove fatal.[1]
