The Horse and Jockey Hotel was a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, <1857-1864>.

The hotel was on the Sebastopol Road[1], now known as Skipton Street. It was above the area between White's Flat and the Woollen Mills, known as "Sunny Corner".[2]

On Boxing Day 1859, wrestling and bowling competitions were held at the hotel:
WRESTLING AT THE HORSE AND JOCKEY HOTEL. In consequence of the thunderstorm and another prize having been added to the list, the games at the above hotel did not conclude until a late hour on Boxing Day. Taking into consideration the fact that prize men were excluded, the wrestling was remarkably good, and was conducted throughout with fairness and good humor. At the conclusion of the sports, the prizes were handed over by Mr Hodge, the landlord, to the respective victors, as follows:
WRESTLING.
- First prize John Smith.... £5 0
- Second prize.. John Vinson .. 3 0
- Third prize .. James Vinson .. 1 10
- Fourth prize.. Andrew Heddy... 1 0
BOWLING Richard Heckin ....a silver watch.
We understand a pigeon match is in contemplation for New Year's Day, particulars of which will appear in our advertising columns in a day or two.[3]
In July 1860 the publican wrote to the newspaper about the state of the road near the hotel:
THE SEBASTOPOL ROAD. (To the Editor of the Star.) Sir, I would wish to draw the attention of the public, and especially the carters, to the state of the Sebastopol road near the Horse and Jockey Hotel; the bridge across the little gully near said hotel I have kept in repair for the last three years, and the road in this place now is all but impassable, and I don't feel inclined to keep a Government road in repair any longer. Might I ask what is become of the £4,000 that is voted for the repairs of the Sebastopol road? There is none of it expended on the said road as yet, although I am anxious that it should be, for the benefit of myself and public. I am your obedient servant, Henry Hodge, Horse and Jockey Hotel, Ballarat West, Ballarat, 5th July.[4]
The road was still a problem in August 1862:
SIR-I beg to call your attention to the dangerous state of Sebastopol road, near the Horse and Jockey Hotel. It is within the municipal boundary, and unless some one comes forward to represent the southern part of Ballarat, the inhabitants of the Redan, &c, should form a separate municipality. I am, Sir, yours, &c., F. SUMMERS. 15th August. ARMSTRONG STREET SOUTH.[5]
In August 1862 a man, William McFaydean, was robbed while near the hotel:
About nine o'clock on the night of the 21st August, as a man of the name of Wm. McFaydean was on his way home, he was pounced upon by two men, not far from the Horse and Jockey Hotel, near the Redan, knocked down, and robbed of his coat, a pair of boots, and £8 15s 6d. McFaydean struggled vigorously with his assailants, and eventually captured one of them, when the other made off but on nearing the gaol with his prisoner, the thief who had ran away came behind McFaydean and felled him to the ground. The two thieves escaped, and have not since been heard of.[6]
The hotel was described in a license application in 1864:
JAMES GILLARD, Sebastopol road, Borough of Ballarat.-Wooden building, containing eight rooms, and licensed under sign of Horse and Jockey Hotel.[7]

Inquests[edit | edit source]
- July 1863, into the death of the pregnant wife of William Duncan, and their three children. They were killed when a landslide of earth and rock crushed their cottage during a storm. Duncan was buried up to his neck, and it was several hours before he was discovered and rescued.[2]
The People[edit | edit source]
- In June 1857, Henry Hooper's license application was postponed for a week.[8] Probably a misspelling of Hodge.
- In June 1858 the publican's license was granted to Henry Hodge.[9]
- His license was renewed in May 1859. (Surname spelled as "Hadge").[10]
- In May 1860, the applicant Robert Denholm failed to appear at the Licensing Court.[11]
- In 1862 the publican was John William Emery.[1]
- His license was renewed in July 1862.[12]
- In July 1864 the publican was James Gillard.[7]
