King had worked in hotels for 25 years before taking the license at the Crown Hotel in Buninyong in March 1894:

Mr J. B. King, who for the past two years has had charge of the Ballarat Club, has obtained a lease of the Crown hotel, Buninyong, and will enter into possession early in March. Mr King has had about 25 years’ experience of hotel business in London, Melbourne, and other cities so that visitors to his new hostelry may rely upon finding every comfort and convenience. During his residence in Ballarat, Mr. King has by his genial nature and his upright conduct made numerous friends who will wish him every success in his new venture.[1]
