History[edit | edit source]

Spence held the license for the Buck's Head Hotel in Clunes after her husband's death in 1890

After George died, Jane applied for the license:

A Licensing Court was also held, when Mr Pope applied for a transfer of the license of the Buck’s Head hotel from the late George Spence to his widow, Jane Spence. Mr Thomson said the Act permitted the widow to retain the license until the annual Licensing Court was held. Application postponed accordingly.[1]

In December 1895 she was fined for breaching licensing laws:

Mr Leader. P M., presided at the police court on Friday, but the only case on the list was the police v Mrs Spence, licensee of the Buck's Head hotel, for sell liquor within prohibited hours. The defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined 40s[2]
