History[edit | edit source]

Airey is listed in Windle's Ballarat Directory (1869) as being a publican in Skipton Street, Ballarat.[1]

In December 1872 his license was renewed for a hotel in Armstrong Street, Ballarat.[2] In June 1873 the license for the Unicorn Hotel in Sturt Street was granted in lieu of transfer.[3] In September 1876, Airey was granted the license for the Atlantic Hotel in Skipton Street.[4]

In December 1877 the police objected to the renewal of his license:

John Airey, Atlantic hotel, dilapidation and inadequate furniture; Mr Salter, for the licensee said that the place was being repaired, and the case was adjourned to 28th inst.[5]
