John Bullick was a publican in Sulky Gully, Victoria, <1890-1900>.

John Bullick was the son of Robert Bullick and Johanna Greewood.[1]


John Bullick held the license for the Waterloo Hotel in Sulky Gully.

In 1888 he married Ann Douglas.[2]

In August 1890 he was charged with selling adulterated spirits:

John Bullick, a publican residing at Sulky Gully, was fined £2, with £3 8s costs, for exposing for sale brandy to which the trade mark of James Hennessy was falsely applied.[3]

In August 1890 he listed as owning 200 shares, at 2s 6d each, the South Hopetoun Quartz Mining Company, which was intending to begin mining operations in Sulky Gully.[4]

In January 1891, Bullick was fined £5 for having the door leading into bar open on Sunday.[5]

In July 1892 Bullick purchased the hotel:

Messrs R. Falla and Cos., auctioneers, Creswick, report that they successfully sold by public auction last Wednesday, English’s Waterloo hotel at Sulky Gully. The property was knocked down for the sum of £490 cash. Mr John Bullick, Ballarat, was the purchaser.[6]

In August 1898 his daughter died:

The funeral of the late Miss Lilly Douglas, daughter of Mr and Mrs Bullick, of the Waterloo hotel, Sulky Gully, took place on Saturday afternoon, and was well attended. Her remains were interred in the Ballarat New Cemetery. The following gentlemen were pallbearers:- Messrs J. Laing, J. Nettleton, C. Smith, and F. Buchan; and the coffin-bearers were Messrs W. Daws, T. Canning, R. Falla, and W. O’Brien. The Rev. J.C. Carmichael read the service at the grave. Messrs Jordan and Tippett carried out the funeral arrangements.[7]

Bullick died on 25 January 1900:

BULLICK.—In loving memory of my dear husband, John Bullick, who died at Sulky Gully 25th January, 1900. Gone, but not forgotten.[8]
