John Endean owned the Golden Gate Hotel in Victoria Street (Melbourne Road). He was declared insolvent and the property was auctioned in July 1860:
MONDAY, 30th JULY. To Publicans and Speculators. In the Insolvent Estate of John Endean. MITCHISON BROS, will sell by auction on the above-named day, on the premises, All that piece or parcel of Land, being Allot. 1 of Block B, Melbourne road, having a frontage of 20 feet to the Melbourne road, and a frontage of 99 feet to East street, being a Corner Allotment, on which is erected the Golden Gate Hotel, Substantially built, with spacious bar, parlors, bed rooms, kitchen, stables and out-houses. Also the furniture and fittings, beer engines, &c. Title perfect. Sale at Twelve sharp. Terms at sale.[1]
