History[edit | edit source]

John Hoyles Kenyon was born in 1824, at Great Bolton, Lancashire, England, the son of William Kenyon and Harriet Hoyles.[1] He married Susan Barlow. In 1851, Kenyon was listed as a licensed victualler at Bolton.[2]

They had several children including:

  • Harriet Hoyles, born 1853, Bolton-Le-Moors, Lancaster, England[3]
  • Emma Hoyles, born 1854, Bolton-Le-Moors, Lancaster, England[4]
  • William Hoyles, born 1858, Sea Lake, Victoria[5]
  • Thomas Hoyles, born 1859, Brunswick.[6]
  • Thomas, born 1861 in Brunswick.[7]
  • James, born 1863, Ballarat East.[8]
  • John Hoyles, born 1864, Ballarat East[9], died Geelong 11 March 1929.[10]
  • Betsy, born 1867, Ballarat East[11]

Kenyon was granted the license for the Royal Oak Hotel in Creswick Road, Ballarat, in December 1873.[12]

In March 1888 his niece was reported missing:

Yesterday morning it was reported at the City police station that a little girl, 12 years of age, a niece of Mr Kenyon, licensee of the Royal Oak hotel, Creswick road, had left the hotel on the previous morning to go to school, and had not returned. As no further enquiries were made up to a late hour last night, it is surmised that the girl had returned.[13]

Kenyon died in Ballarat on 5 August 1902[14]:

The remains of Mr John H. Kenyon late of the Royal Oak hotel, Creswick road, were interred on Friday in the Ballarat New Cemetery. Messrs G. Nichol, C. Hager, T. Williams, G. Martin, W. H. Ottway, G. Brebner acted as pall-bearers. The Rev. G. A. Williamson Legge officiated at the house and grave. Mr Charles Morris was the undertaker.[15]
