Patrick Keane applied for a license for a new hotel in September 1869:

NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR A PUBLICAN'S LICENSE.—To the Bench of Magistrates at Ballarat East.—I, PATRICK KEANE, Farmer, now residing at Bungaree, in the parish of Bungaree, do hereby give NOTICE that it is my intention to APPLY to the Justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions, to be holden at Ballarat East on the twenty-fourth day of September, 1869, for a CERTIFICATE authorising the issuing of a PUBLICAN'S LICENSE for a house, the same to be known as KEANE'S HOTEL, situated at Bungaree, containing one bar, four sitting-rooms, and three bedrooms, exclusive of those for family. Not licensed before, and my own property. The tenth day of September, A. D. 1869. (Signature of applicant) • PATRICK KEANE.[2]

In February 1873 a man died at the hotel:

Terence Doogan died at Kean’s hotel, Bungaree, on the 13th, from suffocation by a piece of meat sticking in his throat[3]

  • In March 1871 a Mr. Walsh held an election meeting at the hotel.[4]

  • From September 1869 and again in December 1873 the license was granted to Patrick Keane.[1]
