Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was mentioned in the Ballarat Star newspaper as being in Armstrong Street, between Sturt Street and Mair Street.[1] Dicker's 1865-1866 Directory places it a few buildings north of the northeast corner with Sturt Street.[2] This is approximately 10 Armstrong Street North. -37.561074, 143.856683 In 1865 the property to the north was H. F. Leech, produce dealer, and to the south Quinlan and Forsyth, ironmongers.[2] In 1888 it was between Thomas Wills (saddler) and Andrew Cant (plumber).[3]

Background[edit | edit source]

The hotel was named for the Lady of the Lake, who was a character in the legends of King Arthur, and also the subject of a poem by Sir Walter Scott.

History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was one of 11 Ballarat hotels closed in 1911 by the License Reduction Board.[4]
