Main Road is a street in Ballarat, Victoria.

The street is about 2.4km in length, running south from Bridge Street south to Ellsworth Street.

History[edit | edit source]

Before 1858 it was called Main Street, then Plank Road and after 1868 as Main Road. It becomes Geelong Road south of the city.[1] There is considerable overlap in the use of the names through the years. Main Road was the main commercial area of Ballarat East during the gold rush, and many of it's early buildings have been recreated at Sovereign Hill. Bridge Street was regarded as part of Main Road until 1858 when it was renamed.[1]

Fires[edit | edit source]

Many of the early buildings were simple wooden and canvas structures, places tightly together. This lead to a several large destructive fires which destroyed many buildings:
