The hotel was offered for sale in June 1870:

MONDAY, 27th JUNE, At One o'clock. SALE BY AUCTION of Allotment 13, and part of Allotment 10 of Section 78, Having the extensive Frontage to Sebastopol street of 227 feet ; together with MALAKOFF HOTEL and TWO COTTAGES thereon, near Mr Grimmett's late Property. FOR POSITIVE SALE. BY ORDER OF THE MORTGAGEE. JAMES ODDIE and CO. are instructed by the Mortgagee to sell by auction, on the Ground, on Monday, 27th inst., at One o'clock, Part of Allotment 10, and Allotment 13 of section 78, containing 1 rood and 27 perches, having 227 feet to Sebastopol street, near Dawson street, with the Malakoff Hotel, two Cottages, and other improvements, and which are likely to be sold a bargain.[1]
