The Mallow Hotel is a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, <1862-2024.

The Mallow Hotel was in Skipton Street[1], the location is now numbered as 20 Skipton Street.[2]

Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

In December 1877 the police objected to the renewal of Mary Sheehan's license on the grounds that the hotel was dilapidated and badly furnished. The case was adjourned for two weeks.[3]

The hotel was one of 23 hotels reviewed by the License Deprivation Board in Ballarat in 1922.[4]

The publican was fined in May 1935:

Annie Margaret Feild, licensee of the Mallow Hotel, Skipton street, was fined £2 by the city court Bench on Tuesday for the unlawful disposal of liquor on Sunday, April 14. [5]

The publican was fined in January 1938:

Alexander Gordon Allen, licensee of the Mallow Hotel, Ballarat, was fined £5 for having had the bar door open, and £2 for having disposed of liquor. Six men found to the hotel were each fined £1.[6]

The hotel closed at the end of 2022, but was reopened with new owners in January 2023.[7]

  • March 1873 on Catherine Thompson:
The body of a woman named Catherine Thompson was found in a house in Skipton street, on Sunday afternoon, by Senior-constable Shine. The woman who was known to drink heavily, lived in a house in the street named, by herself, and the neighbors not seeing her about the place since Wednesday last, gave information to the police. Senior-constable Shine visited the house and found the remains of the unfortunate woman on a bed, the body was in a state of decomposition. The woman was about forty-five years of age. An inquest will be held on the body to-day at the Mallow hotel, Skipton Street.[8]
