Mary Ann Holland was a publican in Ballarat, Victoria, <1870-1872.

Holland applied for a license for a new hotel, in Victoria Street Ballarat in March 1870:

TO THE BENCH OF MAGISTRATES AT BALLARAT EAST. — I, MARY ANN HOLLAND, Spinster, now residing at Ballarat, in the Borough of Ballarat East, do hereby give notice that it is my intention to apply to the Justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions to be holden at Ballarat East, on the 11th day of April, 1870, for a certificate authorising the issuing of a Publican's License for a house situated at Victoria street, Ballarat East. The house contains two sitting rooms, three bedrooms, bar, kitchen, and other offices; is my own property, and is not now licensed. To be under the sign of the "Telegraph Hotel." Dated the 25th day of March, A.D., 1870. MARY ANN HOLLAND.[1]

The license for the Telegraph Hotel was granted in April 1870.[2]

In March 1872 Holland's publican's license was cancelled by the Ballarat East Licensing Bench.[3]

In 1873 Holland married Frederick Royds Ratcliffe.[4] They had several children, including:

  • Catherine Elizabeth, birth was registered at Smythesdale in 1874.[5]
  • Thomas Henry was born in 1875, also registered in Smythesdale[6], and died in 1875.[7]
  • Another son, also named Thomas Henry was born in 1876[8] Frederick Royds was born in 1878.[9], and died 1879.[10]
  • Mary Ann, born 1881 in Sago Hill[11], died in Ballarat in 1948.[12]
  • Rudolph Charles born 1884 in Sago Hill.[13]
  • Bridget May born 1886 in Sago Hill[14], died in Geelong West in 1953.[15] (Brigid and her husband Leslie Bertram Camm took over the license of the Commercial Hotel at Rokewood in 1925.[16]
  • Caroline Eliza born 1888 in Haddon[17], died 1975.[18]
  • Amelia Winifred born 1890 in Ballarat East[19], died 1977.[20]
  • Clara born 1893 in Ballarat East.[21]
  • James Edward born 1896 in Ballarat East[22], died in Ballarat in 1961.[23]

She also raised her daughter Amelia's illegitimate child as her own:

  • Arthur Francis born c.1908, and died in 1976.[24][25]

Mary Ann Holland died in Ballarat in 1928.[26]
