Mary Jane Flannery was a publican in Ballarat, Victoria, <1888>.

History[edit | edit source]

In February 1888 Flannery was fined:

Mary Jane Flannery, the proprietress of a public house, pleaded guilty to having the door of her bar unlocked on Sunday, 29th January. She was fined £5, with 7s 6d costs.[1]

In February 1888 Flannery was sued by the current and former owners of the Times Hotel to recover unpaid rent:

The cases of Thompson v Flannery and Dodd v Flannery, to recover rents alleged to be due for the Times hotel, Victoria street, which were adjourned from the last sittings of the County Court in Ballarat, were heard yesterday by his Honor Judge Casey. Mr Thompson, the former owner of the premises, sued to obtain the sum of £l6 8s 6d; and Mr Dodd, the present owner, to recover £23 11s 6d. Mr Finlayson, instructed by Messrs Pearson and Mann, appeared for the plaintiffs, and Mr Gaunt, instructed by Messrs Cuthbert, Wynne, and Cos., for the defendant. The defence was that the defendant had, at her own expense, made certain necessary repairs to the building, which she was entitled to take from the rents due to the landlord. After hearing the evidence in the cases his Honor remarked that there would be some difficulty in apportioning the amounts of the set-off which should be paid by each landlord. He would enter verdicts for the plaintiffs for the amounts claimed, without prejudice to any claim the defendant had against the plaintiffs. At the request of Mr Gaunt execution was stayed for 14 days, in order to allow the defendant to enter these claims.[2]

At the Licensing Court 1888 hearings the hotel was described as being of 18 rooms, in a dilapidated state, and being indifferently conducted.[3] The court recommend the hotel be closed.
