The Maryville Hotel was a hotel in Wallace, Victoria, <1877-1932.

Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was in the Bungaree Licensing district[1] at Wallace.[2] Sometimes spelled as the Mariville Hotel.[3]

Background[edit | edit source]

The hotel was originally known as the Maryville Hotel (sometime spelled as Mariville) and the name appears to have changed after the license was transfered from Richard Stephen Frawley to Darron Gilmore in November 1932.[4] Frawley's obituary lists him as the publican of the Wallace Hotel.[5]

History[edit | edit source]

In October 1882 the publican offered a reward for the return of a lost purse:

LOST between Warrenheip Hotel and Maryville Hotel, a PURSE, containing five single notes and two sovereigns. One Pound reward tor anyone returning the same to Patrick O'Neil. Maryville Hotel, Wallace.[6]

In January 1895 the publican was charged with Sunday trading:

At the Bungaree Police Court on Thursday, before Messrs Neville and White, J’s.P., Patrick O’Neill, licenses of the Maryville hotel at Wallace, was complained against for permitting liquor to be drunk on his licensed premises on Sunday, the 6th inst. Mr Inspector Hamilton prosecuted. Defendant admitted having supplied the liquor, but stated that it was given to friends, and no payment therefore was asked or received. A fine of 10s was imposed without costs.[7]

In May 1909 the hotel advertised for tenders to rebuild the hotel in brick:

TENDERS are invited for the RE-ERECTION of the MARYVILLE HOTEL (Brick), Wallace, for R. CARROLL, Esq. Tenders re tunable WEDNESDAY, 19th MAY, 12 noon. WM. BRAZENOR. Architect.[8]

On 28 May 1910 the hotel was robbed:

Daniel O’Connor and James Kiely were charged at the Bungaree Police Court yesterday; Before Mr H. M. Murphy, with having in their possession money supposed to have been stolen. Sub-Inspector Ryan prosecuted. Mrs O’Neil, wife of the licensee of the Maryville Hotel, Wallace, stated that on the 28th May the two accused were drinking in the bar. She left the bar for a few minutes, andwhen she got back, she found that the till and its contents had been stolen. Constable M'Kenzie stated that the till had been, found at O’Connor’s lodgings. O’Connor accounted for a sum of 8s found on him by saying he had saved it up to buy boots. He was sentenced to three months imprisonment. Kiely was sentenced to one month.[9]

In May 1918 an application for transfer of the license was made:

LICENSING ACT 1890.NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR TRANSFER OF LICENSE. We, MICHAEL HOGAN, of Wallace, the holder of a Victualler's License for the house and premise known as the Maryville Hotel, situate at Wallace, in the Licensing District of Bungaree, transferror, and ANNIE COLLINS, of Berringa, proposed transferree, do hereby give notice that it is our intention to apply to the Licensing Court for the said Licensing District on the 20th day of May, 1918, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon, at Melbourne for a transfer of the said License from the said Michael Hogan to the said Annie Collins. Given under our hand this 3rd day of May, 1918. M. HOGAN, Transferror. ANNIE COLLINS, Proposed Transferree. EARLY &, CO., Hotel Brokers, 38 Doveton street south, Ballarat. 'Phone No. 868 Ballarat.[10]

In October 1918 the hotel advertised its services:

ANGLERS. — Visitors to Moorabool Reservoir are notified that motor car meets all trains at Wallace station. J. Collins, Proprietor. Maryville Hotel, Wallace.[11]

In May 1919 the publican was fined:

Mrs Collins, the licensee of the Maryville Hotel, Wallace, was fined £10 for having had the bar door open on the night of the races recently.[12]

In May 1929 an application for a license transfer was refused:

Transfer Refused. The Court refused the Application of Mrs. Maud Jane Ann Coyne for the transfer to her of the licence of the Maryville Hotel, Wallace, from Denis F. Carey. The police opposed the application on the ground that during the last 18 months the applicant's husband had been convicted on a charge of having used a cafe in Carlton conducted by him for the purpose of betting The chairman said that the Court was determined to stamp out betting in hotels. The only way to accomplish that was consistently to refuse applicition of this type The imposition of a fine might be drastic, but the refusal to grant a licence for an hotel was more dramatic.[13]

In February 1931 the publican was fined:

Richard Stephen Frawley, licensee of the Marriville Hotel, Wallace, was fined £3 for selling liquor, and £5 for having the bar door open during prohibited hours on 6th December. A charge of having persons on the premises was withdrawn.[14]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

  • In July 1906 the Wallace Home Rule (for Ireland) committee met at the hotel.[15]
  • In September Captain Richard Crouch M.H.R., held a meeting at the hotel.[16]
  • On 8 May 1914 a meeting was held at the hotel to reform the Wallace Football Club.[17]
  • On 13 May 1914 the hotel was the venue for a farewell presentation to an old resident, Mr. P. Lawless, who was leaving the district for Gippsland.[18]
  • In April 1924, the two hurling teams playing for the Allan Doone Cup, had dinner at the hotel after th Bungaree team's victory:

The two teams met later at the Maryville hotel; where the new host, Mr "Dave’’ Gilmour, had prepared an excellent dinner. Owing to the absence of Mrs Gilmour, who is in a private hospital in Ballarat, he was assisted by Mrs Stewart, Misses Egans (2), Everard, Moloney and Mr Roy Stewart, and after the hungry teams had been well entertained, a number of toasts was honored.[19]

The People[edit | edit source]

RE-SALE OF HOTEL BUSINESS. Mr M. Ryan, of Elmore, who recently purchased the goodwill of the Mariville hotel, has re-sold it at a good figure to Mr Belleville, of Melbourne.[3]
