History[edit | edit source]

From at least June 1871 to December 1874 Corson held the license for the Oddfellows' Hotel in Smythesdale.[1][2][3]

In April 1874 Corson's son went missing which caused a considerable panic:

A good deal of excitement was created in Smythesdale late on Wednesday evening, 15th inst., when a messenger came rapidly on horseback to give information to the police that a little boy, belonging to Mr M. Corson, of the Oddfellows’ hotel, near the Smythesdale toll gate, was missing, and supposed to be drowned in an old shaft. It appears that drags were used, but with an unsatisfactory result; eventually the water was baled out, and just about the time that was accomplished, the little urchin, who had been afraid of get ting correction for some offence, made his appearance on the scene, alive and well, having just come from his hiding place somewhere adjacent.[4]

The next day the following notice was in the newspapers:

Mrs Corson, wife of Mr M. Corson, of the Oddfellows’hotel, Smythesdale and Ballarat road, requests us, on her part, to return thanks to the large number of people who so kindly rendered assistance on the night Mr Corson’s little boy was missing, and was supposed to be drowned; Mrs Corson says that her husband is so unwell since the night in question, that he is not able to write to the paper.[2]
