Matthew Hardy was a publican in Ballarat, Victoria, <1859-1873>.

History[edit | edit source]

In June 1859 Matthew Hardy was granted the license for the Staffordshire Hotel in Ballarat East.[1]

In 1861 a publican by the name of Hardy had his license for an unnamed hotel challenged by the police during a court hearing:

Same v Hardy; defendant was charged with abandoning his licensed house and proceeding to New Zealand. It was arranged that the Bench would permit his absence for two months, provided proper application was made. Mr Lewis said Mrs Hardy was quite capable of conducting the house during her husband's absence.[2]

In June 1862 Matthew Hardy was granted the license for the King's Head Hotel in Main Road.[3][4]

The King's Head Hotel was destroyed by a large fire which also destroyed 30 other buildings on 26 November 1862[4]:

"...the King's Head Hotel (late Pantheon Hotel), occupied by Mr Matthew Hardy ; ...uninsured. Mr Hardy, taking warning by the fate of Mr Bridges, of the All Nations' Hotel, further to the westward, and original occupant of the house, had determined to effect an insurance on the morning on which the fire occurred.[5]

In December 1862 Matthew Hardy became a member of the Ballarat Licensed Victuallers' Association.[6]

Matthew Hardy was granted a publican's license for Main Road in March 1872, however the hotel was not named.[7] It was identified as the Greyhound Hotel in March 1873, but his application was withdrawn.[8]
