Michael Meagher was a publican in the Ballarat district, <1876-1893>.

History[edit | edit source]

Meagher was the publican at the Reform Hotel at Haddon from at least 1876-1882.[1][2][3][4][5]

Meagher took over the publican's license of the Lady of the Lake Hotel at Learmonth in July 1884.[6]

In July 1893, Maria Meagher took over the publican's license for the Balmoral Hotel in Learmonth.[7].

In August 1893 his son Joseph accidentally swallowed poison:

LEARMONTH. Wednesday. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) Mr Joseph Meagher, of the Balmoral hotel, Learmonth, and son of Mr Meagher, the well-known traveller for Messrs Tulloch and Son, brewers, last evening drunk a quantity of spirits of salts in mistake for soda water, the former liquid being in a soda water bottle. Dr Salter was immediately sent for, and under his treatment Mr Meagher is progressing as favorably as can be expected, although his condition was for a time critical.[8]

Joseph died a week later from the poisoning at the age of 19.[9]

In September 1893 he transferred the license for the Reform Hotel to Mary Ann Meagher.[10]

Meagher's eldest son, John, was killed in 1895:

We regret to announce the death of Mr John Meagher, son of Mr Michael Meagher, of the Balmoral hotel, Learmonth, and traveller for Messrs Leggo and Sons, brewers. Mr Meagher, who was only 25 years old, was on business at Watchem, and a week ago was thrown from a horse there, sustaining such severe injuries as resulted in his death on Tuesday night. Mr Meagher was for 10 years traveller for Messrs Tulloch and Sons, brewers, and was much respected. The funeral will leave 13 Dawson street at 3 o’clock this afternoon.[11]
