Background[edit | edit source]

The hotel had been earlier known as the Cosmopolitan Hotel and in May 1910 it was renamed as the Mineral Springs Hotel:

"Mineral Springs hotel" Spargo creek, is the new title for Connell's hitherto Cosmopolitan hotel, but it will remain cosmopolitan for all that.[3]

It will be remembered that during the time Mr Connell was licensee of the Cosmopolitan hotel, he had the name changed to " Mineral Springs." It may also be added to his credit the erection of the local telephone, which has proved in valuable. Mr and Mrs Connell are at present residing with the venerable Mr R. Connell, at the Spargo Creek post office.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was advertising in April 1922:

MINERAL Springs Hotel, Spargo Creek. Via Daylesford. First-class Accom. for Easter, Trains met Ballan. Tel. No. 1.[4]

In May 1942 the owner tried to take legal action against the publican:

A claim for £99 damages for alleged failure to comply with lease covenants was made by Mrs Mary Dwyer, of Spargo Creek, owner, against Mrs Ada Cock, licensee of the Mineral Springs Hotel, Spargo Creek, In the Ballarat County Court yesterday. It was alleged that the premises had not been kept in the same repair as when plaintiff had taken over. Judge Maclndoe found for defendant, with costs to be taxed. Mr R. W. Shellord appeared for Dwyer, and Mr Wilson (instructed by Mr T. E. Byrne) for defendant.[5]

In August 1942, Ada Cock left the hotel for the Railway Hotel in Elaine:

Issue of a victualler's licence in the name of owner, the licensee having failed to pay the balance of the licence fee within the prescribed time: Mineral Spring Hotel, Spargo Creek, licence issued to Mary Dwyer (owner).[6]
