Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was mentioned in a report on cattle stealing in February 1856.[3]

In December 1898 the hotel license was valued at £25.[4]

In April 1899, one of the regulars failed to show up at the hotel:

A man about 70 years of age, named James Dick, a native of Leith, had been mining on the Lerderderg, midway between Blackwood diggings and Pentland Hills, for years past, never getting more than a bare living. He used to got his stores at Mr. Drury's Mount Blackwood Hotel, and if his few pennyweights of gold were short he limited his requirements accordingly. As he did not make his usual call last week; Mr Drury sent his son to the old man's hut; 5 miles off, on Sunday, to inquire. Dick was found dead rolled in his blanket, as if he had fallen out of bed. He had been dead about 10 days, and was described at the magisterial inquiry as a skeleton. A. verdict of death from old age and debility was recorded.[5]

In May 1908, the hotel and 340 acres of land were purchased by William Frederick Drury, son of the publican.[6]

The hotel was closed by the Licensing Reduction Board in 1911 and the owners were paid £230 compensation.[7]
