History[edit | edit source]

In August 1859 the publican purchased a large gold nugget:

"ALL NATIONS" Gully now boasts of its fourth rush, caused by the finding of three nuggets, weighing 11 oz; 4 dwts., 4 oz. 10 dwts., and 3 oz. 7 dwts. respectively ; they were taken from Messrs. Cooney, Baker, and Hanson's claim, at a depth of 60 feet, on the side, or the reef, and directly under the site of Le Burt's old horse mill. The 11 oz. nugget is the largest ever yet found on the Mount it has been purchased by Mr. Bernard Murphy, of the Mount Egerton Hotel ; it is quite free from quartz, and about the size of the palm of a man's hand.[2]

In December 1867 the local publicans provided entertainment:

OUR little township was all alive on Boxing Day. By the united efforts and liberality of the store-keepers and publicans, we had races of all descriptions, and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. Our worthy host of the Mount Egerton Hotel made a wager to carry Mr. C. Foreman, store-keeper, 60 yards, whilst his partner, Mr. Witherden, ran 100 yards, Mr. B. Murphy winning with a yard to spare. Mr. Harris, of the Commercial Hotel, also gave a liberal programme, and was well supported; in fact, everybody seemed to enjoy themselves, and as the contractors at the different shafts now being sink are making excellent wages, money seemed to be no object.[3]
