Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was considered for closure by the License Reduction Board in march 1915:

NATIONAL HOTEL, EGANSTOWN ROAD. Mr Bromfield appeared for the owner and licensee, Mrs Severina Pescia. Supt. Bennett said the place was fairly well furnished, and of wood. There was a six-stalled stable that was used mostly by cows. The accommodation was only fair. Constable Strain said the trade was local, mining, tourists, and carting. The only hotel the Basalt Hill people would pass would be the National. The hotel was well-conducted, and clean and tidy. Mrs Pescia said she had been in the hotel close upon 24 years. She was a widow with a family. The house was near the junction of the road from Brandy Hot and Basalt with Daylesford. By the Board: If I had another £15 license to pay on account of the closing of the other hotels, I would not be afraid to meet it. John McLaren, farmer, Basalt, said he lived 4½ miles from the hotel. The hotel was very handy to the residents of Basalt. Jeremiah Dwyer, farmer, Brandy Hot, gave corroborative evidence. Dante Monotti, miner, Sailors' Falls, said there were 20 houses within half a mile of the hotel, which served the carters from the Wheal Dorey ranges. His evidence was corroborated by Thomas Muxworthy. Decision was reserved.[1]
