The North British Hotel was a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, <1858-1863>.

The North British Hotel was in Plank Road[1], later known as Main Road.

In September 1858 there was a sale of goods from the hotel:

MITCHISON BROTHERS will sell by auction on the premises known as the North British Hotel, opposite Bowes Horse Bazaar, The whole of the stock, furniture, and fittings, the property of the above estate, consisting of an assortment of Wines, beer, and spirits, Chairs, tables, sofas, Iron and wooden bedsteads and bedding, Washstands, toilet tables, Pictures, carpets, glass and crockery ware, Large cooking stove and kitchen utensils, Sale at twelve o'clock sharp. Terms -Cash.[2]

The hotel was destroyed by in the Main Road fire of 1861 which destroyed 60 buildings and severely damaged another 40 in January 1861.[3] It was owned B. Payne, and insured in the Colonial Office for £350.

The People[edit | edit source]

  • In April 1858 the license was given to John Mackay or McKay.[4]
    • In June 1858 he renewal was postponed for one week because he did not have his sureties present.[5] Granted one week later.[6]
    • In July 1858, he was refused a night license on the grounds that it was not a first class hotel.[7] He was granted the license one week later.[8]
  • In June 1859 the license was granted to Robert Denham.[9]
  • In May 1860 the publican's license was granted to Walter Trestrail.[10]
  • In 1863 the publican was William Harris.[1]
