The North Star Hotel is a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, 1860-2018.

It was known as "Seymours on Lydiard" for some time, but this business closed in July 2018.

The hotel address is now 302 Lydiard Street North.[1] The hotel was originally called the Soldiers' Hotel in 1857, and later the North Grenville Hotel.[2]

The hotel began in 1857.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was sold in 2002 for $727,000.[2]

The hotel operating as "Seymours" closed without notice on Wednesday 25 July 2018.[3]

In September the hotel owner announced major plans to renovate the hotel, including the addition of a glass roofed atrium, outdoor eating areas, and a rooftop bar.[4]

The hotel was offered for sale in August 2023.[2]

  • In July 1868, the Druids held a meeting at the hotel to receive names pf people wishing to be initiated into a new lodge to be formed at the hotel.[5]

  • In August 1865, Thomas Cowan, a candidate in the Ballarat West election, held a meeting at the hotel.[6]
  • In August 1870, Mr. Fry, a candidate for the council held a meeting at the hotel.[7]
  • In July 1886, P. B. Ivey, candidate for the North Ward, held a political meeting at the hotel.[8]
  • In September 1894, R. T. Vale, a candidate in the Ballarat West election held a meeting at the hotel.[9]
