History[edit | edit source]

In February 1887 the publican was one of several charged with Sunday trading:

James M'Caffrey, North Star hotel...was fined £2, with costs for selling liquor to other than lodgers or bona fide travellers on Sunday. Defendant pleaded guilty.[4]

The hotel was listed for closure by the Licensing Reduction Board in 1888, but had a reprieve after the process was challenged in court. At the Licensing Court hearings in 1888 the hotel was described:

North Star. - J. M'Caffrey licensee, J. North owner; eight rooms. Indifferently conducted.[5]

North Star hotel—John M‘Caffery, licensee; John North, owner. A brick building, eight rooms; fairly well furnished; indifferently conducted; doing chiefly a bar business...John M'Caffery, licensee of the North Star hotel, said his house afforded good accommodation and was well conducted. John North, the owner, considered that the position of the hotel was the best on the road.[6]

It was one of the 40 hotels closed in 1891 in Ballarat East as part of the changes to licensing laws.[7] The owner, Mrs. North, and the publican, James Wills, were paid £865 compensation for the closure of the business.[7][8]

In January 1893 it was reported that the building was now a temperance drink shop.[9]
