In 1892 the hotel was also referred to as Bock's Hotel.[2]

Problem[edit | edit source]

Hargreaves identifies this hotel which was at first the Alfred Hotel in Raglan Road, licensed to Alfred Bock. Raglan Road was the original name for Sturt Street. At the Licensing Court in December 1874 it is known as the Park, but address is Raglan Street; and there is another Park Hotel listed, address Sturt Street with publican Mary Miller.[3] In 1887 Bock's Park Hotel is described as being in Alfredton.[4] So where is Miller's Park Hotel?

History[edit | edit source]

The Park Hotel was first known as the Alfred Hotel.[1] By 1888 it is being referred to as the Park Hotel.[5]

In 1887 the publican, Alfred Bock, was called as a witness into the trial of an employee of Rowland's Aerated Waters, who was charged with embezzling money:

Alfred Bock, licensee of the Park hotel, Alfredton, deposed that he was indebted to Mr Rowlands in July last to the extent of £6 8s, and had paid the sum of £3 on account to the defendant, and had obtained his receipt.[4]

In September 1894 charges against the publican were withdrawn:

The proceedings instituted by Sub-inspector Hamilton against Felix O’Neil for permitting persons to manage the business of the Park hotel without the consent of the Licensing Court from the 22nd June to the 21st July, 1894, during his absence for a longer period than 28 days, were withdrawn.[6]

Following death of the publican Ettie Clohsey the license was transferred to Robert Petch in 1937:

THE LICENSING ACTS - Notice of Application for Transfer of Licence - I, Thomas Clohesy, of Hamilton, in the stale of Victoria, mercer, the executor of the will of Ettie Clohesy, late of the Park Hotel, Alfredton, who was the holder of Victualler's licence for the said Park Hotel, at Alfredton in the Ballarat Licensing District, and I, Robert Petch, of the Cattle Yards Inn, Alfredton aforesaid, barman, hereby give notice that we will APPLY to the Licensing Court at Melbourne on the eighth day of February, 1937, for the TRANSFER of such LICENCE to the said Robert Petch Dated the 20th day of January, 1937. THOMAS CLOHESY, Transferor. R. PETCH, Transferee[7]

The license was transferred again in August 1942:

APPLICATION tor TRANSEER of LICENCE -I John Nicholson the holder of a Victualler's licence for the Park Hotel at Sturt st., Ballarat, in the Ballarat Licensing District, and I Ernest Nicholson of 1 Avoca avenue Elwood hereby give notice that we will APPLY to the Licensing Court at Melbourne on Monday the 7th day of September 1943 for the TRANSFER of the LICENCE to the said Ernest Nicholson. Dated this 28th day of August 1942. JOHN NICHOLSON. ERNEST NICHOLSON.[8]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

  • In April 1892 Mr. Porter held a political meeting at the hotel[2]
  • In May 1893 the Howe Relief Fund met at the hotel. Group included Alfred Bock, John Ward Forester and Mr Daley.[9]
