Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was in Snake Valley.[1]

Background[edit | edit source]

The hotel was reviewed by the License Reduction Board in January 1912.[2]

The hotel was listed for closure in the License reduction Board hearings at Linton in 1919.[1] It was said that the hotel building was in good condition, but not well located. If it was delicensed the owners proposed to move the building onto the site of the Man of Kent Hotel.[1]

In September 1919 the Licenses Reduction Board paid the owner (Ballarat Brewing Company) £200, and the licensee Kate Kirby £70 compensation for the closure of the hotel.[3]

History[edit | edit source]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

In October 1866 the hotel was the venue for an inquest into the death of Augustus Clifton:

On Friday, 26th October, Mr Thomas Hopper, district coroner, held an inquest at Brumfield's Prince of Wales hotel, Snake Valley, Carngham. on the body of Augustus Clifton, who, as was shown in evidence, had died from exhaustion consequent on an attack of delirium tremens.[4]
