History[edit | edit source]

In March 1856, a billiard table manufacturer in Melbourne became insolvent because of his ownership in the hotel:

Issachar Vickery Smart, billiard table maker, Melbourne. Assets, £1180 2s.; liabilities, £1741 6s. 2d. Causes of insolvency: (debts) in some partnership transactions concerned with the proprietorship of the Quartz Reef Hotel, situate at Mount Blackwood, and difficulties arising out of the hotel transactions[1]
The insolvent was formerly a publican and store keeper at Mount Blackwood, and had become insolvent in consequence of having entered into partnership with a person named Rogers, who turned out to be in embarrassed circumstances...Rogers put about £200 in the public house at Blackwood ; but the money did not really belong to him, being the proceeds of goods which had been entrusted to him to sell on commission. The house at Blackwood would doubtless have been a profitable speculation only for the failure in those diggings.[2]

The hotel was mentioned in a long legal case in May 1858, part of which involved Smart's business partners, and his moving around assets, including the hotel which he said was in the name of his partner, Rogers.[3]

In November 1859, Mrs. Charles Hill, died at the hotel:

DIED. On the 17th November, suddenly, at the Quartz Reef Hotel, Mount Blackwood, Mrs Charles Hill.[4]
