Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

In June 1864 the publican, James Boyle, advertised his intention to apply for the license:

TO the Bench of Magistrates at Ballarat East.-I, JAMES BOYLE, Licensed Publican, now reading at Golden Point, Ballarat East, do hereby give notice, that it is my intention to apply to the justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions, to be holden at Ballarat East, on the 1st day of July, 1864. for a Certificate authorising the issue of a Publican's License, for a house situated on the Golden Point, containing seven rooms, and known by the sign of the Rainbow Hotel. Dated this 16th day of June, 1864. JAMES BOYLE.[3]

The hotel was first listed for closure following the License Reduction Board hearings in 1888, however the process was challenged in court and no hotels were closed.

The Licensing Inspector made these comments to the Licensing Court during the hearings for closure in September 1891:

One story. In fair order. Assessment, £84. Licensee, Annie Beyer. Owner, T. M'Laughlin. Four licensees since 1886, and three convictions during same period. It is fairly well conducted. This house is situate in a populous neighborhood.[4]

It was one of the 40 hotels closed in 1891 in Ballarat East as part of the changes to licensing laws.[5] The owners were paid £670 compensation for the closure of the business and the publican £370.[5][6]

In January 1893 it was reported that the building was unoccupied.[7]
