Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

In June 1858 the police opposed a renewal of Thomas Brookes licence:

Thos. Brooks, Redan Hotel, Redan Lead. Inspector Taylor objected as the applicant was addicted to drinking to excess, and had been cranky several times. His fits were periodical and his wife was obliged to make complaint of his behavior. The wife herself was an admirable manager of the place. Mr Lynn supported the application and said the applicant had taken the pledge and promised to get drunk no more. Granted, with a caution to the applicant as to his future behavior.[2]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

Inquests[edit | edit source]

  • December 1857, on Quam a Quee, a Chinese miner who had walked from Robe, South Australia. He had died at Smythe's Creek, and buried. His body was recovered and an autopsy performed at the hotel. Death caused by starvation, probably the result of a bowel complaint.[3]
