History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was destroyed by a fire in 1914, which also killed one of the staff:

FIRE AT MEREDITH. WOMAN BURNT TO DEATH. News was received in Ballarat last evening of the destruction by fire of the Royal Hotel, Meredith, and with the roasting to death of a married woman named Lee, a member of the domestic staff. The hotel, which was a two-storey building, and an old landmark, contained 30 rooms, It was situated at the corner of Staughton and Williams streets, and was owned by the licensee, Mr James Bourke. Some railway men passed the hotel shortly after midnight yesterday morning, and the place seemed to be alright. A little after 2 o'clock a neighbor living about 100 years away was aroused by a glare, an on getting up found the hotel in flames. He quickly ran across, and awakened the inmates. The flames travelled with extraordinary rapidity, and quickly enveloped the building and but for the warning which the household had received, all might have perished. As it was those who were on the premises had a very narrow escape, getting away only in their night attire. When the fire was at its height the occupants were mustered, and it was found that Mrs Lee was missing. The building was totally destroyed, and when the fire had died down a few charred bones were found in the room which the woman had occupied on the ground floor. It is believed that the fire started in the woman's bedroom. The building is said to have been well insured.[1]
