The Royal Mail Hotel was a hotel in Piggoreet, Victoria, <1864-1885>.

Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was at Piggoreet.[1]

Background[edit | edit source]

The hotel is sometimes called "Sharpe's Royal Mail Hotel" or simply "Sharpe's Hotel".[1] Joan Hunt says that Sharp's Hotel was a beer house, and a separate business during the 1860's.[2] Perhaps Sharp took over the Royal Mail Hotel in the 1870's.

History[edit | edit source]

In July 1867 an attempt was made to burn the hotel down:

A DIABOLICAL ATTEMPT appears to have been made to burn down Hall's Royal Mail Hotel, Piggoreet. The house is raised about three feet from the ground by posts ; and it was found that the joists had been set on fire, although the dampness of the materials led to the incendiary's failure.[3]

In July 1885 the owner and former publican, Seth Sharp to action against the new publican for unpaid rent:

UNPAID RENT. —Sharp v Smith, rent due, £10. Mr Hockley appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Humpage for defendant. The plaintiff sued defendant for 40 weeks’ rent of the Royal Mail hotel, Piggoreet, at 1s per week, including 4s per week unexpired license of hotel in plaintiff’s name, which had been transferred to defendant. An agreement in writing was handed in for rent of hotel only, and his Honor made an order for £2 and £1 16s 3d costs, payable by instalments of £1 per month for the first two months and £1 16s 3d for the third.[4]
